1. MakeShift: Alabama Chanin

Tonight Natalie Chanin begins hosting a series of events here in NYC for Design Week.  Tonight’s happening at The Standard is a wonderfully-chosen panel of people including Natalie herself, Roseanne Cash, Maria Cornejo, Cathy Bailey and Andrew Wagner. I’m excited to also see NYU professor Jessamyn Hatcher talk tonight.  I recently heard her present at the joint NYU/CUNY conference on Fashion Studies on her Human-Textile Wellness Initiative, which is a thought-provoking exercise looking at how to reestablish connections between people and their clothing (I’ll post more about her initiative soon!)

I’m most looking forward to attending the sewing circle event on Friday called MAKESHIFT: ACTION and REACTION (A DIY Workshop & Closed-Door Conversation on Cloth, Craft, and Industrial Design). I’ve seen Natalie in action when she talks and sews - it’s a real treat!
