Fashion, Hacked: Liberation Through Participation

I’ll be giving a paper called “Fashion, Hacked: Liberation Through Participation“ at an event tonight at CUNY Grad Center’s Center for Humanities. The title of my paper is actually the same title of the event - I only realized after I had sent them my title that they must of have found it encompassing enough to work for all of the other papers! Other speakers include Jessamyn Hatcher, a brilliant scholar I’ve already written about here.

The exhibit Sophie Gimbel: Fashioning American Couture opens on January 22nd at the Sheila C. Johnson Design Center (SJDC) at Parsons The New School for Design. Curated by fashion historian and professor Beth Dincuff Charleston, this smart exhibition uses garments from Parsons Archive to celebrate Gimbel’s championing of American Couture.

Amy de la Haye Inaugeral Professorial Lecture

If sustainable fashion has an oracle, then it might very well be Kate Fletcher. I often end my lectures on sustainable fashion with a snap shot of way forward, and Fletcher’s books and project Local Wisdom are always included.

I was so happy to hear that the Local Wisdom project is making its way to NYC on Saturday, January 26th, in participation with Timo Rissanen and his students at Parsons. The project is free, and open to everyone!

Join us for a public presentation and reception as Eyebeam launches its latest initiative, Computational Fashion in New York. Bringing together artists, scientists, technologists and the fashion industry, Computational Fashion explores cutting edge ideas at the convergence of fashion and creative technology. The inaugural event will feature presentations by Gabi Asfour, fashion designer and co-founder of threeASFOUR, Sabine Seymour, designer, writer, and professor of fashionable technology at Parsons, and Katherine Isbister, computer scientist and research director of the Game Innovation Lab at NYU-Poly.

Gabi Asfour will present the cutting edge work designed by threeASFOUR and their recent collaborations with technologists in digital fabrication. Dr. Sabine Seymour will discuss synergies between fashion and technology by presenting state-of-the-art artistic and technology examples such as smart textiles that have the potential to function as a second skin to re-create, modify or extend the body through technology. Dr. Katherine Isbister will present her research conducted at the Game Innovation Lab that explores ways to broaden the emotional and social palette that technology offers us by building and testing prototype systems using a wide range of the latest sensing and feedback technologies. Isbister will also discuss her current collaborative work with Eyebeam Fellow Kaho Abe, funded as part of the Computational Fashion initiative.

And yet again the Museum at FIT does a stellar job cultivating young curators! I can’t wait to see the new Fashion and Technology exhibition at MFIT curated by emerging curators Ariele Elia and Emma McClendon. (Disclosure: Ariele was a student of mine - and now a friend - and I’m so psyched for and proud of her!)
